The Valid Testimony

“Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” John 8:13

Text: John 8:12-30

Jesus was being who God called Him to be. He was doing what God called Him to do the day the Pharisees spoke up while He was teaching in the temple and said to Him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” His relationship with the Pharisees by this time was at a place where it would be an understatement to say, “That’s a cruel thing to say to Jesus.” Jesus was not passive in His response to the Pharisees. There is no all out punch in the face but there is a dialogue that follows in which Jesus says, “Guys, you are clueless. I do not know you and you do not know me, let alone my Father." If you were to imagine yourself, standing before Jesus, that is the last thing you would ever want to hear Jesus say to you. At the same time, many evangelical Christians stand in Jesus' shoes. Many Christians may be asked, “Who is vouching for you as you leave your job in favor of a lesser job in order to do what God calls you to do?” “Who is vouching for you as you say, “No” to the person who wants to push the sexual boundaries beyond biblical standards?” “Who is vouching for you as you look for guidance from the bible and see something different than what the popular person is claiming?”

Who is vouching for your actions? Are you alone?

What would you say to an individual today if they looked you straight in the eye and said, “Your testimony is not valid.” Would you say, “Jesus is the light of the world. I am a sinner and I am not perfect but my testimony is valid because I believe that I do not walk in darkness but in the light of Christ because I am a follower of Jesus. Can I tell you what He has done for me?" Or would you speak up and ask also, "Do you know Him? Is He enough?”

Do you know Him? Are you a follower? Why or why not?

What has He done for you?

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
